Dr. Gortzis is a Senior Member of IEEE, and a Vice-Chair of IEEE Greece GOLD Affinity Group Council. His PhD thesis was under the title ''Design Methodologies for Supporting Telediagnostic and Telesurgical Services Over Web''. His research interests include the design and evaluation of Telesurgery Systems, Telemedicine services and collaborative clinical systems, and the use of information technology to increase patient's safety. He has designed many collaborative clinical systems, which are already in use at the University Hospital of Patras, Greece.

His publication record includes five monographs, one book (Greek Version), four chapters and 40 articles in peer-reviewed Journals and Conference proceedings in the field of medical informatics . Dr Gortzis has also been as a Reviewer for 1) National projects from Managing Authority of Information Society, 2)IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine,3) IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 4) Medical Decision Making, 5) Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine, 6) Journal of Medical Internet Research, 7) British Medical Association, 8) Telemedicine and Telecare and member of Editorial board of Scientific Journals International (SJI)

It was an innovative R&D project that included the designing and the implementation of a Collaborative clinical system to support the Collaborative Work During Interventional Radiological Procedures Based on a Multicast Satellite-Terrestrial Network. Foundational work in improving modules of composite solutions built on a prototype Wavelet based interactive Video communication system wavelet codec Partition, Aggregation and Conditional Coding (PACC), and an integrated satellite-terrestrial network via EUTELSAT. Team size: 14 technical staff members.
